General Information about our Carving Classes: Before you purchase any tools you need to know what you want to carve. I would start out with something that is fairly simple. If you are going to carve on your own, one way to go would be to buy a set of 6 tools...I would recommend what we call the Cabe or OTWS Special. This will give you a variety of tools to try, to see which ones you like and don't like. Get a book or two that relates to your interest. That will give you some insight into how it is done and what tools are required. When I start out new students in my classes at our shop, we generally recommend a few basic tools to start with. If you are going to be carving small things in the round, we would recommend the following: 1. A good knife...one that feels good in your hand. 2. A Carving glove to protect the hand that will be holding the carving...this will save on a lot of band aids and maybe a trip to the emergency room. 3. Several V Tools - a 1/4” 60 degree and a 1/8” 60 degree 4. A U Gouge or a Veiner 3/16" or 1/4" and perhaps a 3/8” #9. Although we sell carving tools for all facets of woodcarving, you don't need a lot of equipment to get started. Your initial investment is usually $100 to $150. Overview: Bob has been carving for more than 20 years. His unique style of carving and teaching abilities will benefit anyone interested in getting started or anyone interested in adding to their woodcarving skills. Bob will focus on basic techniques and woodcarving skills, while working on a project. Students can choose from a number of projects. It is an 8 week class that focuses on the basics of carving. |
